When Farah was young she always rejected the Qur’an as she thought that the position of women in Islam is bad. Her uncle was a communist when he was young so he always criticized Islam. He criticized that men should pay the money of their pleasure to their divorced wives and that men can marry several women and can hit them whenever they want. He also criticized that women should take half the money that men take in the inheritance and that two women should witness in the court instead of only one man. He also criticized Islam for not solving the problem of slavery and the prophet for marring too many women. As a teenager Farah only listened and could not discuss anything.
Then once Farah thought that as long as she believes that the Qur’an is the words of God and not of anyone else then it should be right. If God ordered us to do anything then it should be the right thing to do. After that she began to read the Qur’an with different perspective. She accepted God’s orders and she thought that one day she would find the wisdom of it. She began also to read about the interpretation of Qur’an, Islamic rules and Islamic history.
After a short time Farah found the answers for her uncle’s accusations. The money of pleasure as most people thought was a misinterpretation because the word pleasure in Arabic language ” Motaha ” means also luggage. The correct interpretation is that when the man divorces his wife he should pay the expenses of her getting back to her family.
The prophet never hits anyone of his wives and we are ordered to follow his steps. When prophet Jacopo was ordered to hit his wife to fulfill his promise he took a weak stick full of strings and touched her lightly one time only. Men were allowed to hit their wives to learn them that they have the upper hand in their houses. Men also should pay all the expenses of their wives and that is why they should take double the money in inheritance.
Each one of the prophets’ wives played a very important role in Islamic history and Islamic rules and this could never be fulfilled by only one or two wives. Getting married to more than one woman can solve many problems during war or when the wife is ill or in case of chastity.
Kadiga the first wife was wise as she was older than him. She supported him in his early days by her wisdom, money and family. Aisha was able to tell more than two thousand quoits after his death as she was young and fresh minded. Safia helped to avoid a big problem when all the pilgrims were about to disobey him. She advised him to order his hair to be cut in front of all the Muslims to follow him.
Habiba was the daughter of the head man in Maka and he married her when her previous husband turned to Christian religion. Zinab was married before to his previously adopted son. God ordered the Prophet to marry her in order to prevent adoption. Safya was the daughter of the head of the Jews and she told him that the Jews were sure that he was a prophet but they refused to follow him.
Soda was an old widow with children and by marring her he became a model to all Muslims in order to support widowed women. Mariom was an Egyptian Christian slave and he let her free and married her. By this marriage Egyptian people became his relatives. Gurira was the daughter of the head of one Arabic troupe and by marring her more than a hundred of her family were released from slavery as Muslims refused them to be their slaves.
The problem of slavery was a global economic one and could not be solved in a short period. No one of the previous prophets solved this problem before but Islamic rules helped to diminish it by time until it disappears. For example, if you eat in Ramadan, killed a Muslim, killed an animal during pilgrim or drink alcohol, you must set a slave to be free.
The menstrual cycle, pregnancy, labor and lactation can affect women memory and judgment. For example premenstrual tension syndrome cause fluid retention in the brain leading to headaches and confusion. Also hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and severe hemorrhage during labor can cause a permanent damage to the brain. Instead of this, the prophet once took the testimony of only one midwife to judge in a case.
After that Farah decided to wear the veil. She was the first one in her family and her street to wear it. Her parents were abroad at that time and they were surprised when they came back and saw her in the veil. She had no long dresses so she wore only one dress for almost two months until she could sew another one. Her sister, cousins, friends and neighbors followed her years later.
Farah’s father never accepted the veil and he was always against it. He refused that her mother put it for many years until his sisters did. Farah stopped going to the club or playing sports for a long time because she was the only girl with a veil and long dresses in the club. Later on, many club ladies put the veil on and she started to go to the club again. By the time, women with veil also started to play sports again.
